RE: Cell Phone as WiFi Router

Yes, interesting that Verizon apparently does not support the identification of mobile browsers in the http header, but it would seem to me they send some ID - such as the mobile device identifier - otherwise a cell phone would see exactly the same page as a desktop which my Razr certainly does not - it sees a "lite" version.

RE: Norton or McAfee

Well, against corporate rules, I just UN-installed Norton Symantec Endpoint Protection from my computer. I got tired of typing an email and looking up to find nothing on the screen, or clicking my mouse and nothing happening for 10 seconds. When I started to monitor things it turned out to always be a piece of SEP jumping in the middle to check something. I fell back to our previous corporate standard, pure Norton AV, no firewall or spyware. I'll deal with those separately.
On my non-work PC's I just use AVG.

RE: Cell Phone as WiFi Router

I couple of interesting points here.
you have to use data at a rate impossible for the smart phone to process before they would have any proof
Not true of course, because as joshjack correctly pointed out simply monitoring the browser id would be far more conclusive and much easier. That said, I don't know of any carrier that goes through the expense of doing this.
I tether all the time via USB and get one big advantage you will not - my phone charges while the USB is plugged in while yours will have one heck of a hefty drain providing cell service as well as powering a wireless access point. Make sure you keep a power source handy while you surf!

RE: Aircards - Verizon vs att

Alex I hate to tell you because you never believe it, but my actual experience indicates that your coverage map for AT&T 3G is as hopelessly out of date as AT&T's own web site.

Go with Verizon and leave the AT&T bandwidth for those of us who find it fast and available everywhere we need it! :C

RE: XP System cannot restore the computer to earlier date?

I finally discovered the answer to this perplexing question. Simply boot into Safe Mode and restore will work just fine.

RE: Norton or McAfee

Neither one! Go for AVG - it's free and seems to be as effective and less intrusive than both McAfee and Norton! Click here and follow the links for the free download

RE: Any problems with XP service pack 3?

Apparently this is an issue with your wireless card utility software. This software is a monitoring tool that you probably shouldn't run anyway because it just wastes memory. Try the following:
click Start
click Run
enter: msconfig
click OK
click Start Up tab
uncheck WZCSLDR2 and airplusCFG.

In that case, if that is what you want, personaly I would never put my home equity into a depreciating item...While I agree with your recent posts I couldn't help but find humor in this one! I seem to have a lot of my home equity in depreciating assets - MY HOMES!!! :B

RE: Request a receipt for sent e-mail messages

You'll only get return receipts if the other person is also using Outlook. If they are using some other email client, you won't get a receipt.
I think return receipts are more for the business world, not personal emails.Eudora also handles Return Receipts.

RE: Unsecured Wireless Network

1. So, if I log into my bank account while on a secure site (https, etc.), they cannot get that info? Conversely, if the secure symbol does not appear on the log-in page, they can get the log-in info?
2. Also, while the computer is indiscriminately connected to a wifi signal, can someone look into my hard drive and, for example, get my ss# off a letter I've saved in Word, or get access to a (Juno off-line) saved e-mail which contains my log-in info?
Norm -
In answer to your first question - if you see httpS you are perfectly safe. If not then it is possible someone could see what you are sending if they happened to be looking and know how.
Re: your second question - if File Sharing is OFF and your personal firewall is ON you are as safe as if you were sitting at home connected to your cable. To determine if File Sharing is OFF go to Start->Show All Connections then put your mouse on your wireless connection and click the RIGHT mouse button. Then click the LEFT mouse button on Properties on the menu that pops up. A list will appear starting with Client For Microsoft Networks. If File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks appears in the list make sure it is UN-checked and click OK. If it does not appear just click OK.

RE: Unsecured Wireless Network

Yup - right out of the box the cell cards are pretty much the most secure means of accessing the Internet.
Dave
Nope, not true - in fact quite the opposite. On an unsecured WiFi network the only people you have to worry about is anyone else on the network. So you use preventative measures like disabling unsecured shares ... maybe a software firewall.
When you have a cell card you get an IP address on your laptop that is accessible by anyone else on the internet. Obviously the trick is getting that IP address, but with that they have the same access as the WiFi people.
JMaybe you need to do some research! The cell links are completely encrypted and behind an individual firewall at the tower interface. And of course you run a personal firewall - you need to do that on ANY link where you are exposed to other untrusted machines! :R (which, BTW, cell links are not but no need to turn yours off) I leave mine on behind my own wireless router because I don't bother to secure it.

RE: Florida Sunpass RV & Toad

I didn't write any software for the Sunpass, but I was involved in the rest of the toll system on Florida's Turnpike and my guess is that the software is written to allow only one Sunpass detection per "transaction". You can think of a transaction as the time from when a gate goes back down until it opens for the next guy. There are a lot of detectors that need to be read - treadles for axles, vehicle separator, etc. and then the counters all get reset for the next vehicle. Also it would surprise me if the developers even thought of coding in software to accumulate Sunpass readings.
I presume you an check your account online as with EZ-Pass so I would certainly take a look after trying it, but basically I wouldn't worry about it.

I haven't tried it but I imagine it is much safer to use a proxy server than downloading and installing some unknown piece of software.

RE: Request a receipt for sent e-mail messages

John makes a good point - some mail clients simply do not process return receipts. For example my GMAIL account simply does not (to my knowledge) ever return a receipt. The net is that while you can count on a receipt you receive back, you can't rely on the lack of a receipt indicating the message was never read - it may have been read but no receipt issued for any number of reasons.
